After 6 full seasons Mike Milbury has decided to step down as head coach of the Colorado Avalanche. Milbury goes out with an impressive 303W - 149L - 32T - 8OTL regular season record, and a record of 55-28 in playoff competition. In addition Milbury has collected 2 JGHL championships, 4 Pacific division titles, 2 western conference championships, and 2 Presidents trophies, while missing the playoffs only once in 6 full seasons at the helm. One of only a few remaining original coaches, Milbury will leave behind a legacy in Colorado that will be hard to be matched. In a brief press release Mike Milbury had this to say.....
"I would just like to thank the Avalanche organization for their faith and belief in me over the last 6 years. Without managements commitment to winning I would have never achieved the success that the team has enjoyed. With only one 1st round pick in the last 5 seasons it shows a true testament to winning, as I was always provided with the types of players needed to win. It has been a pleasure to coach hall of fame caliber players such as Lemieux, Jagr, Shanahan, Stevens, Hasek, Oates and of course 1st ballot hall of famer Joe Sakic to name a few, and wish the Avalanche continued success in the years to come. Thank you for your time."
While Mike Keenan has been promoted to head coach, Joe Sakic, eager to get his coaching career underway will be taking over the reigns of the minor league affiliate Landslides.
