With the trade deadline come and gone the Avalanche weren't the biggest name of the board, but they did get their deals done. Sent packing was youngster Brendan Gallagher who was once thought to be a future mainstay along side Alex Galchenyuk. In exchange Colorado received two talented, young forwards in Craig Smith and Nicklas Jensen. Smith is currently enjoying his most productive year to date and looks like he can be a consistent 25-30 player for years to come. While Jensen has only gotten a small taste of the big show he's already shown he has what it takes to compete and contribute in the big league. Also acquired in the deal was Brandon Bollig who is most known for his hitting and feisty play. Bollig (#21) combined with Matt Martin (#1), Colin Greening (#9), Nick Foligno (#14), and Derek Dorsett the Avalanche now boast some of the fiercest hitters in the game.
In a more significant move the Avalanche acquired defenseman Luke Schenn to bolster their blueline. The former #5 overall pick is one of the best hitting and defensive d-men in the game and all indications point to being paired with Radko Gudas (acquired earlier for prospect Linus Arnesson) for years to come. Two of the top three hits leaders for defense, these two will surely make a formidable force and terrorize opponents for many, many years ahead.
With the pieces starting to finally fall into place and the influx of young talent still yet to come and develop, we are now starting to see the bigger picture in Colorado. Looking ahead to the talents of young players such as...
Nathan MacKinnon, Chris Kreider, Brock Nelson, Anders Lee, Max Reinhart, Seth Jones, Jarred Tinordi, Calvin de Haan, Scott Mayfield, Simon Despres, Robin Lehner, Chad Johnson, Anton Khudobin and many others...
...the Avalanche should once again start their climb to the top of the mountain, as one of the leagues most storied franchises hopes to regain their former glory.
With two 1st round picks in the upcoming draft and one of those slated to be in the top 5 Colorado certainly has possibilities moving forward, and GM Madsen was recently quoted as stating that the team will indeed be exploring those options come draft time.
With things finally starting to turnaround, the fans in Colorado definitely have some excitement to look forward to in the coming seasons.
