I'm definitely not eliminating Ovechkin from the discussion because of his lack of team success. That's the argument of others on here. He deserves consideration. Henri Richard isn't a better player than Bobby Orr because Richard won eleven cups to Orr's two.
And I do agree with the easier position argument.

Most individually skilled player in the world - Crosby. Most valuable player to his team - Toews. Best player to start a franchise pre McDavid - coin flip.

I know I'm kind of going off topic here, but I think Tavares is actually the most valuable player to his team in the league. The Isles would be much, much worse off losing Tavares for the season than the Pens would be losing Crosby, Hawks losing Toews or the Caps losing OV for the season.

I like Tavares alot, one of my favorite players, when I drafted Storme, I had Tavares on my mind.

I think Crosby is individually the best player in the world. There are 2-3 other players in the league though that seem to make the players around them better to a larger extent than Crosby though...namely Toews and Tavares.

Interesting side note - in the 2006 draft the Pens took J. Staal second, Toews went third. Imagine if the Pens took Toews If that happened, the Chicago Blackhawks would not have won any cups and Pittsburgh would have probably won 3-4 times from 2009 till now.

Well if you measure it on points alone he's got the highest PPG average in the league in past 10 years, a second scoring title just two years ago, Stanley Cup, Olympic gold. Universally seen as best player below hash marks in the league and if not the best passer in the league certainly right there with Thornton. If there's a more complete player I'm not sure who it is. If not for the serious injuries we wouldn't even be having the discussion.

He might have had a whole different career as a Hawk. Injuries have plauged him his whole pro career, this should be the telling year for him, as his value continues to drop even in the JGHL.

How many other guys could turn Pascal Dupuis into a 60-point player and Chris Kunitz into a 35-goal scorer.

Obviously Chris Kunitz is a terrible hockey player, the worst in fact, thats why Crosby pretty much secured his spot on the Olympic team, because he sucks.

How many other guys could turn Pascal Dupuis into a 60-point player and Chris Kunitz into a 35-goal scorer. I'm not really talking about just line mates. In my opinion, Toews makes every player on his team a better player... Even the ones he doesn't play with. Basically I'm referring to Toews leadership ability. I'm not sure Crosby inspires players in the same way. Dupuis and Kunitz are not bad players. Dupuis was a 40 point player, Kunitz had scored 20 goals a year in almost every season he had played (including on the Ducks). Crosby increased their production by about 20 points each. Hell, you could argue Jarome Iginla turning Craig Conroy and Daymond Langkow from 50-60 point guys to 70-80 point players is equally impressive. That being said, as I said before, I still think Crosby is the better player. Physically dominant, impossibly to knock off the puck, tremendously quick, creative... He has it all. Toews just has the "intangibles" that everyone seems to have trouble describing.
