My first trade deadline that I have been a seller, and I'm pretty happy with my haul back. A ton of prospects with potential, and a few more draft picks to really help boost the prospect pool, these Penguins might be able to start to do some damage coming up in the next couple of years.

I feel the same although less of my deals are at the actual trade deadline. The thing Im unaware of and perhaps placing too much hope in is how quickly picks and prospects mature. Time will tell but totally enjoy the league and the banter even though it may seem like Im putting up my "Wolls"

Its important to remember that even Auston Matthews and Laine this year, who are the exception to the rule, still take a full year to be well rated. A guy like Marner, who is clearly a stud and was a top 10 pick still took 3 years to get well rated (drafted 2015, ready for 2nd line duty next season).

This was my first season that I was not involved in 5, 7 or more trades near the deadline. This might be the year I made the least amount of trades out of all of them. The team I have are having some decent years in NHL and have a few older vets having good seasons so hoping ratings for my team goes up enough to be more competitive. I was more competitive than I thought I would be this season so it has been fun. I had some crappy teams in past but this season is fun as I can compete with all but really top teams. If I had goalie rated higher than 75 this season could have annoyed more teams. LOL But still having lots of fun with you all and thanks to Jon this season for all he does! He is the reason this league is amazing! Also, some amazing hockey guys who are the most knowledgeable guys I know!

Sometimes a guy shows all the talent in the world in minors and doesn't translate because of work ethic/conditioning/injuries and a laundry list of other reasons. I thought Drayson Bowman was a stud, and a bona fide star in the making. Then there was Igor Grigorenko who was almost paralyzed in a car accident. With picks, it's good to remember they are pretty much currency and can always be flipped. Chris knows this very well, I tend to forget sometimes lol. The talent, especially at the top half of first round of drafts is filled with guys that will have ratings in 1-3 years.

Not trying to be a downer here, but if you look at the 2014 draft, of the first 30 picks somewhere between 6 and 8 will have 1st or 2nd line ratings NEXT year.
Not one guy drafted in the second will. Thing is, there's still tons of guys with loads of potential that could (and probably still will) pan out. But it takes time.
I believe in building through the draft, but it certainly does take time.

For new GMs and vets alike: - even us vets can make tactical errors - I've been around since close to day 1 (original Flames GM) - at trade deadline I dealt for Curtis Lazar - being right up against the cap, i thought, no big deal - he's 21, so I can simply send him to the farm - well, I had a brain freeze and forgot, that while I can send him to the farm, because he's played over 20 JGHL games this season, his salary counts against the cap whether he's on pro or minor roster - not a huge deal, but I was planning on using William Karlsson on my 4th line, but now my hands are tied to using Lazar
Just a word to the wise that even us "old timers" can have brain freezes (getting more and more common in my world...lol)
