Rating Information:
- All rating calculations are based on regressions between a stat and the rating. Sometimes, multiple stats are used in order to calculate a single rating, and each stat is weighted.
- All stats are pro-rated to 82 games to normalize for GP (for example, if a player has 5 goals in 41 GP, that stat will be prorated to 10 goals in 82 GP).
- After the rating is calculated, some players may receive “rating penalties” or deductions based on their number of GP, FO taken etc.
- All of the formulas are strictly adhered to, to remove all bias.
Skaters:
CK – Checking
- Effect: the higher the rating, the more likely a player is to hit someone and cause a giveaway.
- Calculation: 80% hits, 20% ST rating
FG – Fighting
- Effect: the higher the rating, the more likely a player is to fight.
- Calculation: 10% ST rating, 20% DI rating, 70% major PIM / total PIM
DI – Discipline
- Effect: the higher the rating, the less likely a player is to take a penalty.
- Calculation: 100% minor PIM
SK – Skating
- Effect: The higher, the more likely a player is to dodge a hit and prevent a giveaway.
- Calculation: 5% SHP, 5% takeaways, 30% PH rating, 60% PPP
ST – Strength
- Effect: the higher the rating, the less likely a player will give away the puck. ST also impacts the CK and FG ratings.
- Calculation: 20% height, 80% weight
EN – Endurance
- Effect: the higher the rating, the more TOI/GP a player can handle without losing a CD point.
- Calculation: 100% TOI/GP.
DU – Durability
- Effect: the higher the rating, the more likely a player is to get injured.
- Calculation: 80% GP, 20% EN
PH – Puck Handling
- Effect: the higher the rating, the less likely a player is to give away the puck.
- Calculation: 20% SC, 20% PA, 60% giveaways/points (the lower the ratio the higher the rating).
FO – Face Off
- Effect: the higher the rating, the more likely a player is to win a faceoff.
- Calculation: 50% FO taken, 50% FO winning percentage
PA – Passing
- Effect: the higher the rating, the less likely a players pass will be intercepted.
- Calculation: 100% assists
SC – Scoring
- Effect: the higher the rating, the more likely a player will score when taking a shot.
- Calculation: 100% goals
DF – Defense
- Effect: the higher the rating, the more likely a player will block a shot, take away the puck, or intercept a pass.
- Calculation: 10% sum of takeaways and blocked shots, 30% +/-, 60% SH TOI per GP / team SH TOI per GP (the higher the ratio the higher the rating)
PS – Penalty Shot
- Effect: the higher the rating, the more likely a player will score in a shootout or penalty shot.
- Calculation: 5% SC, 35% SO percentage, 60% SO attempts/team SO attempts (the higher the ratio the higher the rating)
EX – Experience
- Effect: The higher the stat, the better his morale and his team morale will be. Limited effect on faceoff.
- Calculation: 90% age, 10% FO rating
LD – Leadership
- Effect: The higher the stat, the better his morale and his team morale will be.
- Calculation: 30% highest of PA, SC or DF ratings, 70% EX rating
Deductions:
- Deductions are applied after the initial rating is calculated.
- To calculate the deduction, we simply multiply the calculated rating by the percentage deduction.
- Please note a 5% deduction is actually quite severe. For example, a penalty of 5% usually reduces the rating between 3-5 points.
- ST, DU, and LD are not subjected to any penalties.
GP – GP deductions are applied to CK, SK, EN, PH, PA, SC and DF.
- >40 GP = 0% deduction
- 22 – 40 GP = 3% deduction
- 12 – 21 GP = 10% deduction
- 7 – 11 GP = 20% deduction
- 0 – 6 GP = 30% deduction
FG – based on GP. This penalize “enforcers” who tend to play very few games, yet still get into a lot of fights, so there is no deduction if they play 7 games or more.
- >6 GP = 0% deduction
- 0 – 6 GP = 30% deduction
DI – based on GP
- If GP <11 and minor PIM >300 = automatic 25 DI (the minimum rating)
- If GP <16 and minor PIM < 10 = 5% deduction
FO – based on total FO taken
- >50 FO taken = 0% deduction
- 31 – 50 FO taken = 10% deduction
- 11 – 30 FO taken = 30% deduction
- 0 – 10 FO taken = 70% deduction
PS – based on total PS taken
- >3 PS taken = 0% deduction
- 0 – 3 PS taken = 10% deduction
Goalies:
- There are not many goalie stats available on NHL.com, so many of ratings are calculated using a composite rating. The composite rating is a good indicator of the goalies “overall” rating, and we actually use it to rank the goalies when evaluating the accuracy of the ratings.
- After the composite is calculated, the deductions based on GP are applied to the composite rating. The composite rating is then used to calculate the actual ratings used in the sim.
Composite Rating:
- Used to calculate portions of several goalie ratings
- Calculation: 30% GAA, 30% total wins, 40% SvPct
Composite Deductions:
- > 50 GP = 0% deduction
- 41 – 50 GP = 1% deduction
- 31 – 40 GP = 3% deduction
- 21 – 30 GP = 5% deduction
- 16 – 20 GP = 10% deduction
- 11 – 15 GP = 13% deduction
- 6 – 10 GP = 30% deduction
- 1 – 5 GP = 40% deduction
- 0 GP = 50% deduction
