This is obviously a Leaf centric post but Babcock is/was the highest paid coach in the NHL. My personal take is he was always slightly overrated - the cup run with Anaheim was mostly carried by Giguere, Detroit runs had multiple HOFers on roster, and gold medal teams were literally the best teams ever put together.
He brought good habits to the Leafs but ultimately couldn't get them to their potential. Poor guy Keefe comes in with a monumental task of getting this underachieving team into the playoffs let alone going deep. Good luck Chief Keefe!

He clearly wasn't getting through to the younger players. Hes a great coach for a veteran team but the new wave is here and they want to be stroked. Hopefully Sheldon has his stroking mitts at ready.

Funny, I made this post the day of without any inside knowledge (clearly). And today the story breaks of his bullying tactics with Marner during his rookie season. Decent coach but sounds like one shitty human being. Good riddance, hope he never gets another job again.

The Spezza thing was a good indicator of his mashonistic tendancies

I was going to say they fired the wrong guy but it looks like they fired the right guy but should have cleaned house.
Hard to add keefe and maybe get an upgrade in terms of the quality of person you hire.
I still think ultimately Dubas in the problem as he does not look like a good GM at alk but if the Marner story is treue Babcock should have been fired earlier.

Seems like Babcocks protege Bill Peters is now on his way out in Calgary due to allegations he made racist comments in 2010 to Akim Aliu.

Also look at the Canes since he left, they've been rolling, and Flames have been crap. It's 2019, there's no more room in hockey or any other sport for racism, homophobia, bullying, or general shitbagness. Some will call it "old school" tactics, which is just an excuse because it's just garbage. Btw I remember Akim Aliu, he was a rising prospect. Read that he was on pace for a 20 goal rookie season when that happened, and then Peters requested him to be sent to ECHL, and the guy hasn't made it back since. If you think about it, he potentially ruined his career/life. Peters should honestly not only be fired, but get the living shit kicked out of him.

There is also speculation that he hit players when he was in Carolina. One of those players (Michael Jordan) came out with the news after Aliu made his comments.
They also say that on both stories, other players are backing Aliu and Jordan.
Not looking good for Peters, I suspect that he will not a week.

Well the Flames didn’t do badly under Peters last year, but this year they are downright horrible. If these allegations are true he deserves to go regardless.

I don't think he ruined his career, Aliu was crap in every season after that one and it is hard to imagine that one demotion would take away all your skill. Doesn't excuse what Peters did but his 17 points in 48 games were hardly impressive numbers no matter how he wants to spin the on pace for angle.

Well, it certainly didn't foster development. Akim played pro hockey for 9 years so he's no slouch either. A fine line between most of these players and I don't imagine its easier with that weight on your shoulders. No room in the game for that nonsense

No room in the game for that nonsense Tough position, how do you as a player speak out against your coach who controls your ice time and controls if you are active or a healthy scratch every night? Also interesting the Babcock and Peters were both on the Red Wings staff at some point. There was always a ton of rumors that the Swedish guys on the team hated Babs and company, now it's all finally starting to make sense. Wonder what else is going to come out about coaches that are still in the NHL today.

Scott - to say it's one demotion might be putting it lightly. If he experienced racism, bullying, and then got buried in the farm system, I'm sure that would have a deep effect on his psyche going forward. An older example is Patrick O'Sullivan, it's a sad story so look it up if you don't know. The guy had all the skill in the world but could not overcome the mental battery he took over the years.
These guys are 18-19 year old kids as rookies. Development at that age is shaped by everything around them, and if a coach is purposely stalling it or worse, it that could have permanent damage. I feel for all these guys. As far as the Babcocks and Peters of the league, truthfully they're no better than someone like Graham James.

Happened when he was a kid and wasnt just bullying, it was full on abuse and assault over and over...
