The long rebuilding season for the Sharks has been marked by one bright spot: Nicklas Lidstrom. The defenseman has amassed 75 points in 74 games this season and, knock on wood, should surpass the previous JGHL record for points by a defenseman The record is currently held by Tom Poti who scored 77 points in 82 games back in the 2003-2004 season on the Detriot Red Wings. Brian Rafalski (72 p in 75 gp) and Chris Pronger (70 p in 74 gp) also have a chance at matching the record. The previous record for points by a defenseman on the San Jose Sharks was 56, set by Sergei Gonchar back in 2004-2005. Lidstrom has also broke San Jose's record for assists by a player with 63 already this season. The record was previously held by Joe Thornton, who had 62 assists in 2006-2007. When asked about the record, San Jose's captain responded modestly: "I've had a good individual season, one of my best, but it has been soured by our teams poor finish. Next year I expect that we will be a lot better with some of our young guys showing a lot of promise. I think Zach (Parise) and Eric (Staal) are going to rip it up next year". Right now the Sharks projected line up for 2009-2010 looks dangerous, but still has some holes Rumor has it Sharks GM Jake Graas is likely to try to fill the gaps in the line-up via trades, rather than relying on free agency.
