Carolina GM Kevin Byrnes spoke to the media at the RBC Center after tonight's 6-4 loss to Detriot, which was the Canes 9th loss in a row.
"We as an organization are not happy with the way the season is winding down here. We started of the year 0-6 and made a big acquisition by trading for Roberto Luongo. We did turn the season around made a steady climb up the standings. But over the past few weeks we have become inconsistant, and now are on a 9 game skid. We have made a hard decision, and after talks with Ronnie over the past 36 hours we have all decided that he will step down as head coach and resume his postion as head of scouting in North America."
GM Byrnes added "Now we are happy to announce that we have signed Mike Babcock as Caroilna's new head coach. Mike's resume speaks for itself and we are sure he will right the ship and lead us into the post season." Mike Babcock was not yet in town and unavailable for comment.
During their 9 game losing streak, Carolina has been just about even in shots, being outshot 253-252, but they are being outscored 40-17. They are 5-21 (23.8%) on the PP and are 8-10 (20%) on the PK.
