San Jose made two major signings today that both secured the future and the present states of the organization.
First general manager Jake and Zdeno Chara agreed to terms on a 4 year extension on Chara's current deal. This contract secures San Jose's future on defense with Kaberle, Chara and Phaneuf all locked up long term at bargain prices.
Next Alexei Yashin signed a 1 year contract for 3 million dollars. With the loss of Paul Kariya and Mike Sillinger the Sharks desperatly needed some secondary scoring. Yashin's passing ability should mix well with Eric Staal's talent for finding the back of the net. With Teemu Selanne's future in question the Shark's still may go after another top six forward. If Selanne stays with the team San Jose will have a very potent offense.
Sharks coach Steve Yzerman commented on the signings on the Fan radio earlier today.
"With the Weber/Tanguay trade there was some concern that the Sharks were getting too soft. By retaining Chara we maintain that tough reputation while adding Yashin ups our overall talent.
A team cannot win soley based on hard work, nor only on skill. There needs to be a balance. The signings of Chara and Yashin on the same day show this organizations commitment to this philosophy."
Following todays movements the Sharks line up is as follows. There are still some holes to fill.
Tanguay-Thornton-Selanne
Yashin-Staal-Shanahan
Franzen-Pahlsson-Laperriere
XXX-XXX-XXX
Extras: Filppulla, Smith
Kaberle-Phaneuf
Rafalski-Chara
Robidas-XXX
DiPietro
Holmqvist
Osgood
The fourth line still needs to be filled out as Smith and Filppulla are not deemed ready for the role. Sami Kapanen, Owen Nolan and Chris Simon are rumored to be negociating with the sharks for the jobs. Osgood or Holmqvist will be delt before the season starts.
