Ive always been of the mind that the goalie is the most important position in the game.
I dont think you need an elite one to win (you do need a good starter, 83 and up), but in a year like this where there were so many teams so close to each other in the standings, it only makes sense that the goalies would shine through. Looking at the top 8, really, every team has a ton of firepower.

I think it is realistic Eug. Using a homegrown experience, look at the years that the Leafs won a few rounds with Cujo or Belfour.. their defense wasn't great.. A great goalie can take you pretty far... oh yeah.. Carey Price maybe! where's Montreal now? I think it's where it should be.. I just wish I had a better goalie now lol That's exactly my point though! Price is/was the best goalie in the league last year and Montreal didn't go far. Same with the Leafs back in the day, because of other roster flaws. But for us, where the top 8 teams are pretty close to each other on paper most years, the ones with the better goalie will go further, even with flaws at other positions that other teams don't have. If you think about it, an 82-83OV goalie shouldn't be THAT much weaker than a 84-85OV, but they always are. I don't know, these are all shower thoughts so I could be off. But right now the way I see it, if you're thinking of competing for a cup in any given year, and don't see a top 5 goalie on your roster close to the deadline, might as well fold.

I dont think you need an elite one to win (you do need a good starter, 83 and up) On the contrary, based on everything I looked up, you do need an elite one to win. You can compete with an 82-83 one, and maybe go far, but you won't win. Nothing in the past 5 years (most recent sim and ratings) have showed that you CAN win with a stacked roster, and an 83OV goalie.

Special Teams and Faceoffs very important as well. All 4 3rd rd teams are 1 - 2 -3 - 4 in faceoffs.
We need to crank up injuries and apply the morale factor as per the creator's suggestion. I did manage to take a better team to a gm 7 ot with an 83 ov goalie, which Eug suggested is possible to do, but my faceoffs and special teams were terrible.

On the surface I think it's easy to look at the goalie as the deciding factor but I really think there's more to it.
One way to look at is that with such ridiculously stacked teams that the goalie is the "tie breaker". I'd surely rather have an 85OV goalie to my opponents 82OV goalie, instead of having 7 forwards with 75+ SC to my opponents 6 forwards with 75+ SC.
Personally I think it has to do more with the goalies CON number. Look at San Jose and Varlamov (82OV) who far and away has been the best goalie in the playoffs. But I'm pretty positive that going into game 7 versus Vancouver that Varlamov was not 100 CON. Meanwhile Joe took a chance and rested Bishop during the series, I don't know if he was at 100 CON for game 7 but I'm pretty sure he was higher than Varlamov.
I really don't think there's that much difference between an 85OV goalie and an 82OV goalie, but personally I'd take the 82OV with a higher CON than the 85OV goalie with a lower CON.

I've found that the goalies play more or less the same at any CON above 95, in which they are exhausted. I've gotten steller games from 97 CON goalie and awful from 100. I don't think CON matters that much to a goalie, as long as its above 95.

Bishop was at 100 CD before the game. Varlamov was real solid in both series I played, but Bishop was stellar in round two... even better than Varlamov. I'm not sure why Bishop's stats aren't higher... maybe Bishop put up bad numbers in round one.
Here are his stats in round two:
Game 1: (loss) 0.885 svpct, 23 saves Game 2: (win) 0.941 svpct, 32 saves Game 3: (win) 0.930 svpct, 43 saves Game 4: (rested) Game 5: (loss) 0.925 svpct, 49 saves Game 6: (rested) Game 7: (win) 0,972 svpct, 35 saves
Varlamov had real bad games in 2 and 3... around an 0.85 svpct and only had one game above 0.92. Varlamov reasonably rested (99-100) except for the last game, where he was at 97 or 98.

I agree with Jon's thoughts on the importance of good Goalie management. Wish I had used Howard in my gm 6, no balls though, I slept on it and decided to use Crow, might have been a big mistake, Crawford was 97 in gm 7 and that went to OT.

Well.. we tie the series up to regain home ice advantage.. but I wish our team would play with some consistency.. This leaves me with a few decisions for Game 5, because we know the Rangers are going to come out strong.. so it's a matter of what adjustments we need to make. I'm reluctant to make many, because our best players are showing up and Holtby is starting to look human.. but if our offense runs dry again, this won't be long from over for us.
We're blocking shots.. we're winning faceoffs (very even though).. but hopefully we'll give a better effort on home ice.
Might I say.. the western conference finals is very interesting to keep track of.. The Blues are definitely giving Vancouver a run for their money!!

Wow.. these games are becoming something else. My team takes an early lead only to see ourselves down in the 3rd period.. and we tie it up to win in overtime. Talk about a roller coaster.
Happy to have the lead going back to MSG.. but man it's not going to be easy to close this out.. I know those guys are going to come out strong..

Pretty bold gamble by Vancouver today resting Bishop and starting Talbot, paid off huge especially since the game went to double-OT! A lot of tired guys in both lineups, should be an interesting game 6!

Congratulations to Gary and the entire Blues' organization on a great season and a great series. The Western Conference was so strong this season, I'm actually a little surprised to get back to the final again. Beating Florida or the Rangers will be a challenge, but we'll do our best to make the Western Conference proud in the JGHL Cup Championship series.
