The New York Islanders have jumped out to an overachieving start before settling into a .500 grove that many thought would be too much to ask from the team. Ryan O'Reilly and Milan Michalek have led the Islanders offense sitting near or at a point-per-game pace, combined with Eric Fehr and Jay Beagle chipping in with surprising numbers. New captain and defensive stalwart Ryan McDonagh coupled with youngster Jacob Trouba have eaten the most minutes on the blueline and are being relied on to shut down top opponent offensive threats. Perhaps the most valuable player thus far for the Isles has been Jaroslav Halak, whose early dominance in net has some listing him in the early shortlist for the vezina, holding a .922 save percentage while allowing only 35 goals over 11 games. The outlook for New York looks to be glum, with the team looking to fight for a playoff spot off the backs of its stars, a feat nobody thought possible at years beggining.
