I thought this series has been pretty interesting. As the ratings guy I have always been interested in this stats... my main area of concern is their accuracy at this point and that sometimes they are interpreted incorrectly IMO. I like these stats as it takes an innate bias out of analyzing players. Anyways, here are the top 20 D according to Sportsbet's analysis Another major issue I have with them is how they rank "offence".... I still strongly feel goals and assists are very good indicators of offensive abilities, and I'm not sure the writer used those basic metrics..... Defence is always very difficult to quantify, so I enjoyed their analysis of defensive ability... Bergeron sure enough came out on top in that category at C. www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/ranking-top-20-defencemen-nhl-numbers/#2 was Mark Giordano, which I definitely do not agree with, but I have seen much worse lists created by traditional writers using their own opinions of players (based on watching them/ basically anecdotal). Here are the centres (I like this list quite a bit actually!) www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/ranking-top-20-centres-nhl-numbers/

Its interesting to see different ways at looking at players, but having watched the Flames since long before both guys were there and certainly the past two years there is no way that Gio is better than Brodie and not a chance that he is 2nd overall in the league. There is also zero chance that Karlsson is close to the best defenseman or that anyone other than a healthy Duncan Keith is even in the same category as Drew Doughty who is head and shoulders the best defenseman in the league. Other laughables are Niskanen top 10, he isn't top 50, not sure even top 100. Weber of course not being there since stats hate him but actual play shows him being top 10 if not top 5. Subban top 3? Bwahahahahaha. Shattenkirk ahead of Pietrangelo? If Brian Campbell was on a 1 year, 1 million doallar deal I would hope the Flames would pass on adding him but somehow I am supposed to believe that he is top 20?

Hey look Barrie isn't worthless like everyone in our league seems to think he is! Amazing!

Roman Josi was nowhere to be seen too!
I thought the C rankings were far better than for defensemen... it is just difficult to rate defensemen. I would argue our ratings are a better way of ranking the D!

The LW list isn't posted, but based strictly off of numbers they had Ovechkin as the 10th best LW. Tomas Tatar was ranked 4th, and although I love my Red Wings, Tats is not the 4th best LW in the NHL today!

Good example as to why you should include something crazy like goals and assists in "advanced" stat analyses.
