In a perfect World I would like them to go because I love best on best hockey and want to see it as much as possible.
But with the way the IOC and IIHF seem to want to just take from the NHL and give nothing back I am fully in support of the NHL not going. No reason at all for them to give them all the players, refs, off ice officials and time from their season and get nothing out of it themselves.
I enjoyed the World Cup and am more than happy having that be the best on best tournament. A benefit there is no IIHF invovlement which is always a huge positive.

I also feel thet the players could have negotiated with the nhl to go but clearly took a stand. Seems odd that the PA forces the NHL to negotiate any change in rules, and expectations always demanding a concession ( mid season 5 day break for World Cup ) yet expects the owners to serve up perks for free

Well, I think its the kind of situation where both sides were going to lose from the start.
The IOC cant set the precedent of paying the NHL to come out, because then all the international basketball and football stars (and tennis and golf etc.) would be asking for the same thing.
I think the best idea i had heard was to have hockey in the Summer Olympics. Obviously not a summer sport, but it would allow for the best players in the world to go.
At the same time, pretty sure all the world football (soccer) leagues let their players go to the euro/copa america when the season is going and shut down for the WC.
I also think the NHL fucked this up badly with the last world cup, which felt like it didnt matter at all. There were two teams in the world up that were made up!!!

Honestly as a fellow owner and billionaire myself I totally understand where the NHL/owners are coming from. To have my best crop of assets go play for pride in the middle of a grueling season, and possibly come back with injuries that may linger until the end of said season is unacceptable. I'm paying them millions of dollars to play for me, I take care of them, provide 24/7 doctors and surgeons. Why take the liability risk?
As a fan, it'll be fun to see Ovechkin skate circles around amateur pylons and win a gold all by himself.
