I'm always surprised by the movement of selections in the J. Really surprised to see that goalie jump so many spots. I personally hate drafting goalies, they take ages to develop and even the top end prospects end up massive question marks. I find the best NHL goalies come outta "no-where", like Scott Darling or Ed Belfour....yeah know, instead of...Rick DiPietro. The goalie jumped so many spots because I think he has the potential to be special and I was pretty sure he wouldn't be available at 27, so he had to be picked at 9 or 11. I had two forwards I liked basically the same amount, so I chose to pick Oettinger at #9, just to be safe. Sometimes you have to jump a player up in the draft order to get what you want.

Good luck, I just think the position is so fundamentally different that few draft level players make it, or history seems to show.

To be honest I'm not sure why anyone would criticize the selection of Oettinger. The Hockey News just ranked him as the 37th best 21 and under player in the world ahead of all 2017 draftees except Nico Hischier (19th) and Nolan Patrick (25th). The only goalie ranked ahead of him was Russian Ilya Samsonov (20th). Kind of sounds like a Top 10 pick to me.

Round 1 is now over, round 2 is open for anyone that is around and wants to make their selection(s).

All I really said is I don't like drafting goalies, I'm not down on Oettinger as a player, he looks like he could be great and if he works out for you, awesome.

I'd shy away from tenders with the last name Di Pietro

There is about a 1 in 1,000 chance a drafted Goalie ever makes it to the NHL. So Gavin is expressing an opinion, and not trying to criticize anyone who picks one.

You are correct, he was my selection to make at #26, as I was not expecting anyone to draft a goalie any sooner... Now just got to hope that Luukkonen becomes someone decent in the NHL

That's okay.. and Joe is giving us insight on his thought process. Healthy dialogue. Keep it up!! Man.. there are some gems out there. Some guys I was even thinking about drafting in the first round. If anyone's looking to get rid of their pick, give me a call!

I'm already happy with my 1st round, especially my 29th pick.

Yea same, not criticizing the pick or the player since I know literally zero about Oettinger. Just seems like most guys picked in the 1st or 2nd round fizzle out or backup at best. I hope that's not the case for your guy Joe
