Two seasons ago the Detroit Red Wings were in a rough place. GM Hunter Jones was taking over a severely dismantled team, one with none of their own first rounder for the next 2 seasons and no appealing trade assets. Fast forward to last year. The team, while still not owning any first round picks was in a significantly better position. Top end players like Logan Couture, Alex Steen, Steve Mason and Morgan Reilly rounded out a lineup that managed to make their way to the playoffs after only missing the year before. Heading into this Off season Jones had a decision to make: Improve upon the team and try to make it further along in the post season or blow it up and try again. Based on the shape of the roster headed into this season its crystal clear what route he chose to take. With a roster whose best player is currently second year defensman Esa Lindell, this is not a team ready to compete but a team chalked full of potential.
At forward the Red Wings are loaded with some top end talent in players like: Matthew Barzal, Nick Schmaltz, Andre Burakovsky, Josh Anderson, Filip Chlapik, Micheal Dal Colle, Roope Hintz, Zachary Senyshyn, Aleksi Heponiemi and recent first rounder Filip Chytil. Along with them there are other exciting players like: Andrew Mangiapane, Rudolfs Blacers, Paul Bittner, Jack Studnicka, Jake Leschyshyn, Yanni Gourde, Vinnie Hinostroza, Mitchell Stephens, Matthew Peca and Ondrej Kase.
At defense the Wings carry top prospects: Esa Lindell, Julius Honka, Josh Morriessy, Travis Dermott and Jordan Schmaltz. They also boast talent like Troy Stecher, Andrei Mironov, Fredrik Claesson Max Lajoie and Ben Hutton
Finally, in goal the Wings have top goalie prospects Andrei Vasilievsky and Thatcher Demko to go along with young players Samuel Montembeault and Brandon Halverson.
The future is bright in Detroit! Lets hope this rebuild leads to good things!
