I thought it would be interesting to see what changes you would make if you could. Here are 2 that always bothered me...
1. Penalty Shot or PP Choice:
In the NFL when a penalty is called the other team has the option to take the result of the previous play or accept the penalty and the yardage. In the NHL I would like to see the option that when a penalty shot is called (which is obviously a penalty) that the team has the choice of the penalty shot or accept it as a penalty and take the 2-minute powerplay.
I think this would create a lot of strategic decisions, especially late in a game. Maybe the goalie you're facing is great against penalty shots, maybe your team sucks at them, maybe your PP has been clicking all game (or maybe it hasn't), late in the game down 1 goal do you want one shot to score or the 2-minutes of PP time. I think it would be very interesting to see which option teams would choose most.
Again, it's a penalty being called on the opposing team so why not give the receiving team the choice.
2. Game Clocks:
In the NFL there is a huge game clock and playclock in each endzone for the offensive team to easily see as they go down field and the defensive team can easily see the one at the other end (they are huge!). In the NBA there is a game clock and shot clock on the top of each basket for the offensive team to easily see.
In the NHL yes there are some game clocks scattered throughout the arenas along the rafters but the main clock for the players in way up in the air on the scoreboard at center ice. If you're the team on offense then the only way to see the clock is to look behind you and stare up at the ceiling, obviously not something you want to do while in the offensive zone. And if you're playing defense in your own zone then you have to take your eyes off the puck, tilt your head back and stare up at the ceiling to see how much time is left.
How many times at the end of a game with a team down a goal have you seen them scramble to run their play and get a shot off before time runs out and they either rush it because they think they have less time, or not run the play fast enough and not get the shot off because they think there's more time left than there really is, or the shot comes late after the final horn and a scrum breaks out because of a late shot.
They really should put a clock at each end of the ice right next to the goal light at the top of the glass behind the goalie. It's kind of baffling that they haven't done something like this already.
Feel free to comment on mine or add your own...
