From TSN:
After months of rumours and speculation, the Ottawa Senators have finally dealt Erik Karlsson.
Three days after owner Eugene Melnyk discussed a rebuild and roster overhaul in a social media video to the fans, the team has traded its captain and two-time Norris Trophy-winning defenceman to the San Jose Sharks.
The Senators will receive Chris Tierney, Dylan DeMelo, Josh Norris, Rudolfs Balcers, 2020 first-round pick, a 2019 second-round pick and two conditional picks in return. The Senators also sent Francis Perron to the Sharks in the deal.

[HAHAHAHA omg they got hosed so bad, Melnyk is a fkg moronnnnnnnn. Not ONE of those pieces is considered elite or blue chip. Tierney is a great depth player but cmonnnnnn, no idea who any of those other plugs are. Ooooo a 2020 Sharks pick? What's that gonna be, 26-31? For a 2 time Norris winner.. Just lol

Conditional picks could both potentially end up as 1st rounders, but yeah in the grand scheme of things San Jose wins this. I believe they have the cap room too to extend him, because they were in on Tavares this offseason as well.

I think the Senators did as well as could be expected considering the circumstances. Karlsson wanted out, had turned down a long term extension and wasn't prepared to agree to an extension with any team before a deal. All of these factors contributed to lowering any potential return. Teams were only offering on one guaranteed season. So sure they didn't get equal or even really good value, but his value now was probably higher now than it would be at the trade deadline. They couldn't risk losing him for nothing like the Islanders did with Taveras. Sorry, Jon.

These morons screwed this thing up so badly that this franchise is the joke that just keeps on giving. So Last season they know that Karlsson isn't giving a hometown discount.. they know soonafter that he doesn't want to resign.. Dorian said TODAY that in FEBRUARY they knew they were going to have to rebuild it... so why not trade him at the deadline from last season when the returns could have been much better? You knwo why? Because Dorion tried to attach Bobby Ryan's stupid contract to it.. and teams werent willing to break the bank in a return for that.. Okay.. so now they STILL know that they're going into rebuild mode and at the draft... they keep their pick instead of giving it to Colorado when they know that they're going to tank like hell and have a chance at Jack Hughes?? WTF?!? Okay.. okay.. so now.. NOW.. they not only not get a deal done at the draft.. they let this linger all season.. and THEN.. a day before camp starts they deal him for this garbage and they STILL don't get rid of Ryan's contract, but they felt they have to do it.. so they live with this return? They didn't even get a damn first round pick back in 2019 and they're rebuilding? Holy jeez I hope my team's transformation isn't this laughable because this is horrid. And I didn't even mention that cringeworthy five minute video with Eugene Melnyk and what's his face .. (no really. .. who is he?) and that my friends... is the Ottawa Senators. ... for now.. [Quebec, you watching?]

Saw via Twitter:
Dorion was actually a nominee for GM of the Year just 14 months ago!?
(To his credit, think his hands are tied by Melnyk the Train Wreck)

Probably but he's definitely making sure he doesn't get another GM job... I would have re-signed last year if he wouldn't let me trade EK or make the right decision about that pick.
So you passed on Jack Hughes for Brady Tkachuk? Sure.. Tkachuk will help you win... if you're in a position to win! LOL

So you passed on Jack Hughes for Brady Tkachuk? Sure.. Tkachuk will help you win... if you're in a position to win! LOL I think you have to actually win the lottery to get Jack Hughes. No guarantee that you get a better player than Tkachuk unless you are lucky enough to hit the 1 in 6 chance of getting the 1st overall pick. And that assumes you are the worst team in the league, and that, I think, is still to be determined. I'm not a Senators fan per se, and no fan of Dorion and Melnyk, but I think Senators' fans are overestimating what Karlsson was worth, given the current circumstances. Despite his tears yesterday, I think #65 made it pretty clear that he wouldn't resign in Ottawa and wouldn't agree to an extension with anyone else before a deal was made. Teams aren't going to give up top young assets for a guy who might walk at the end of the season, no matter how good he is. Doiron's options were to make a deal now where he gets a boat load of fair to good assets (although 1st rounders are always valuable and don't necessarily have to be in the Top 5 or 10 to be major pieces) and hope one or two or more turn out to be solid pieces or wait until the trade deadline and risk getting even less. Although the Ottawa management team does look like a bunch of idiots, I am sure even they would have taken a better deal if it was on the table. My guess is this was the best offer they got. All this talk about how they should of traded him at the deadline or at the draft is all fine and good, but nobody really knows what they were offered, and I'm sure at that moment (at least last February) Dorion still thought he could find a way to get Karlsson to stay, since really it's probably the only way he could save his job long term.

Really tough to fathom Sens couldn't have gotten a better haul, given the length of time they've had to consider this. But maybe easy for us to say - perhaps it was based on the demand - what was truly being offered up by GMs. It's easy to look at it and say look what Vegas/Oilers even my Flames could have given up for him, but there are stuff behind the scenes we really don't know.
I still think the Sharks made out like Bandits in this one - guess will be interesting to see if he resigns there, then it is truly a grand slam.
*** Somewhere Marc Bergevin is smiling, looking at himself in the mirror saying "Gosh darn it, I am not the worse GM in hockey!"
(though again, not sure how much autonomy poor Dorion has)

Yea I find it hard to believe that IF Vegas was in on Karlsson, they couldn't offer a better package. Even something like Shea Theodore + 1st would be better than the package of mediocrity the Sharks offered. But you're right Chris, easier for armchair GMs to critique it, who knows how the market truly was out there. Still gives me a good laugh knowing the Sens are probably the biggest joke in all of hockey. Hang in there Ceci.

I think that Vegas backed out once they picked up Patches. They still have a ton of assets and a good team, and I don't think they would have went in on Karlsson unless they knew that had him long term. San Jose makes a good play here. Get Karlsson at the beginning of the season, let him play with the team for a full year, learn the San Jose culture, get to know the San Jose area, and then convince him how great they are and sign him long term. Thornton coming off the books this year, they can pay Karlsson the big bucks. Just thank goodness he didn't go to the Lightning.

Well, I ask my self why the Sens even have a GM; Melnyk is running things and making the decisions...
Next players to go are Duschenes, Stone, Anderson, Ryan, Ceci and Pageau
And not to forget that with Melnyk saying that half the team will be rookies; Colorado will have the first overall pick next year.
