2017-18 Season
Flames had to overcome four formidable opponents with better regular season records in last season's Stanley Cup playoffs in winning the Cup, the 4th and probably toughest win in franchise history.
With many mighty teams prepped to be major contenders, the upcoming season will be one of the most highly contested in the J yet.
OFFSEASON
In: Carter Hutton, Nick Schmaltz, Adam Gaudette, Dylan Sikura, Ian Scott, Collin Delia, Nick Lappin, Justin Kloss, and a bunch of picks
Out: Big Buff (UFA), Jeff Skinner (ugh, up against the cap), Jonathan Bernier, Victor Mete, Andreas Johnsson, Jonathan Dahlen, and a bunch of picks
Draft: picked a bunch of prospects (15 in all, with names like Barrett, Isac, D'Andre, Gruden, Kral, and Jett Woo!!! {must be pronounced with your best Ric Flair impersonation}
2018-19 Lineup
FORWARDS
1st Line: Landeskog (73 OV), Scheifele (74 OV), Wheeler (77 OV)
The Bla-Ga-Ma Line (aka Land-Wheel-Shuffle Line) will be tough to contain and to penetrate
2nd Line: Rakell (72 OV, 81 SC), Getzlaf (73 OV, 88 PA), Point (72 OV, 79 SC & DF)
The Get-Rake-Point Line (aka Ry-Ri-Bray Line) has an intriguing combo of QBing, finishing, defensive awareness
3rd Line: Schmaltz (69 OV), ROR (O'Reilly, 73 OV, 94 FO), Reilly Smith (72 OV, 79 PA, 82 DF)
The Schmaltzy-O'Reilly-Smitty (SOS) Line will be puck possession and pursuit demons
4th Line: Guentzel (68 OV, 82 PH), Toews (71 OV, 88 FO), Drouin (68 OV, 83 SK)
The Captain Serious is on the F@ckin' 4th Line Line (aka Triple "J" Line) is not your typical 4th line. Toews will also see plenty of PP & PK time.
First Call-Ups: Cizikas (78 CK, 77 FO, 79 DF), Jankowski (70 SC)
CC was a key cog in Flames Cup win will be looking for his chance.
Janko had 17 goals in NHL last season in limited action.
DEFENSE
1st: Subban (74 OV), Dumba (71 OV)
Suby-Du
Play smart against these two dynamic X-Factors.
2nd: McDonagh (72 OV, 85 DF), Gardiner (70 OV, 81 PA)
McG(u)ard
The two-way tough-to-play against dude and the QB
3rd: Muzzin (72 OV), Slavin (69 OV, 83 DF)
Muzz-Slav (aka The Two Jakes) is not your typical 3rd pairing. Muzz may move up to 1st pairing on occasion. Slavin may block more shots than Bob.
7th dman: Gustav Forsling: (70 SK, 69 PH, 78 DF)
Sweet Swede waiting in the wings for his chance.
GOALIES
1st: Bobrovsky (81 OV) - the likely deciding factor in how far the FLames go this year
2nd: Hutton (78 OV) - should be an upgrade over hockey's Ocho Cinco (Chad Johnson) from last season, who performed admirably when called upon and won a couple of key playoff games
3rd: Kuemper (74) - ready to be called upon if needed
(staggering stats in limitedNHL duty to start the year)
