Just curious to everyones thoughts on this situation. Where do you side? Leafs or Willy?
Im a die hard Leaf fan but for the sake of the whole league I hope they don't crumble. Id prefer they make him sit the year before trading his rights. It is crazy to me to think that you snub your nose at $52 million for 8 years because you want $64 milliom. $52 is money that secures generations of your family forever.

What if he decides to take the team friendly deal, and comes back then all of a sudden he suffers a career ending injury?
He has now just left money on the table because he would have been pressured into it by his peers and the organization, money that he could need now because he will not get another NHL Contract.
I don't think there is any problem for recognizing your self worth. As a recruiter, I pretty much tell everyone I work with to do that, because nobody can put a price tag on your value but YOU.
We don't think it's anything because of the amount of money these guys are dealing with, but if I'm in his position, I probably make the same stand.

Im always going to side with the players unless they have been disrespectful or unreasonable, which in this case it doesnt seem like thats how it is. The TML can print money, so ill never feel bad for them, and in general if you own a professional sports franchsie, you have some money. The cap situation is what it is, and players get traded for cap reasons all the time. A player shouldnt have to take less to stay unless they want to. If the fair number is too much for the team, shake the players hand, get a good return for him and wish him well. What pisses me off about this situation is that it seems pretty clear what the outcome is. Objectively willie is worth 6.25-7 million. its not even cloudy, thats what hes worth, factoring in age. But he wants to get paid for his potential, not for his production. And thats not how it works unless a team is desperate to retain you. It seems pretty cut and dry that he should sign a 2 year bridge deal at the proper number and then get paid megabux if he proves hes that good. But you havent proven shit. You havent won anything, and you have 2 60 pt seasons. Thats it. At this point without any knowledge that a deal is close, i would want the leafs to flip him ASAP.

In total agreement Monty, 6.5-7 is a reasonable expectation of salary. Everyone wants to be paid for projection nowadays. Thankfully my employer isn't paying me for projection because I see my numbers tapering a bit As far as being paid what your worth that's what UFA is for. Applying the real world to pro sports is difficult as Willy has one suitor in the NHL. Probably more in the KHL but if your applying that to real world how many of us would leave our job and move to Russia for a 16% pay increase?

I don't think he's earned his payday YET, and needs to show he will remain consistent before he gets his BIG contract. If I was the GM in Toronto, he'd have already been traded by now, I wouldn't want that sorta selfish attitude in my locker-room, he hasn't earned the right to do what he's doing. If he had two 80's point seasons (30+ goals), THEN maybe we could talk, but two 20 goal 60 point years playing with Matthews? That actually seems BELOW what he should have done.
