Pretty sure Dupuis is the most shocking 10 mil player we've ever had. I don't think so. His ratings are amazing this season. If I could afford it I'd give him the same contract as the Oilers. I'm surprised to see Dupuis at 10 million before Datsyuk though.

I know the argument will be but a team could also offer 3 yrs at 4 mil per yr and beat team A Exactly, which is why there needs to be a "line" and we decided that is the highest monetary value per season . It can be broken down too many ways that we had to just pick what that "line" was going to be.

I agree with Jon here. Who can say if a player would prefer a 1 year/ 10 million dollar deal, a 3 year/ 15 million contract, or a 2 year/14 million contract.... it just gets too complicated and highest monetary value per season is a practical way of doing it in this league.

I was in a league once, where for every additional year on the contract, the value per season could be 10% less and still considered equal.
For instance, in that league a 1 year, $ 10 million dollar contract would be the same as a 2 year, $ 9 million dollar deal, a three year, $ 8 million dollar deal and a 4 year, $ 7 million dollar deal. If the deals were deemed to be equal monetarily, then the longer term would win, so the 4 year, $ 7 million dollar deal would be considered the best offer of the four mentioned.
I always thought it made sense, because what 30 year old player wouldn't rather get a 4-year deal that would pay him $28 million dollars over a 1 year deal that woud pay him $ 10 million.

Pretty sure Dupuis is the most shocking 10 mil player we've ever had. This is precisely why I go back to my stance in years gone by that a FA should be awarded to the team based on the totality of the contract. For instance, Team A bids 1 yr @ 10 mil per yr Team B bids 3 yrs at 7 mil per yr Team B 21 mil versus 10 mil and wins the player. I know the argument will be but a team could also offer 3 yrs at 4 mil per yr and beat team A, but I think this scenario would never occur. My 20 pesos. First off Dupuis is the only 80 SC in FA, the best RW, and has good numbers. Why is it shocking? lol Also, yes, it would occur constantly. Why would it not? What reason would Team B have for NOT bidding 3 years at 4 per over 1 at 10? There is no reason in the WORLD not to do that, regardless of player almost. Also (2), we have this talk every year, lol. Why would a player, 30 years old or not turn down a 1 year 10m contract? The next year if he does well again he could sign another 2 year 10m contract...and now he's got 30 mil over 3 years as opposed to 28 over 4 years. The simple way to do it is money first, then years.

Yes, but you fail to see how it would go down - many more teams would be involved in this scenario or the team that bid 1 yr @ 10 mil would also consider adding years to the term. I know - sometimes difficult to discuss on the forum. We need an annual JGHL conference...lol...and discuss over some fine beverages!

The teams with the most cap space (which tends to naturally mean, the worse teams) need to be able to use their money as their muscle so they can ice a competitive team. The teams without money likely already have some great players on their roster. The current system makes the league more competitive
