So looks like we have 2 offer sheets on day 1!
That offer on Weiss seems a bit excessive to me...5m for a big question mark seems risky.
The bid on Artem is a solid one and now Kevin has a choice to make. Is Artem worth 5m? (or rather, 4.5m, matching price) I think he probably is, but Russians.
Its an interesting FA already.

Well, correction! There is a 3rd
Spezza has one as well, but 3.6m match price isn't too bad for that guy.

Weiss and Spezza are perfect examples as to why compensation should be based on the bid, not ratings just sayin'... And that's the last I'll speak of it.

Yeah I thought the bid on Spezza was kind of a dick move. If I were strapped for cash (like Car & Nsh) and was now forced to choose between my own players or even was priced out on Spezza and there was no way I could afford him, I'd applaud the crafty maneuver. But to think I'm going to let one of the best centers in the game go for a 3rd round pick (because of an injury) when I have over 20-million in cap room and could easily re-sign him pretty much makes no sense. And if someone really wanted to make a play for Spezza then why not make a bid that actually requires consideration on my part, otherwise it's pretty much just raising his salary for the hell of it, which is pretty lame.
I can't believe I'm actually about to say this, but after all these years I think I agree on RFA compensation being based on offer and not rating.
And Datsyuk getting $100,000 increments is pretty funny!

It seems a bit unreasonable to expect other GMs to do nothing while you sign Spezza to a four year, $2.25 million contract, just to "be cool". It frees up money for you to go after other free agents, that they may want too. I think you'll be lucky to get Spezza for the $3.6 million he is currently at.

- I don't think I'd call any move a "d!ck move" here, esp. amongst long term GMs. You could have actually used your RFA resign on him, no?
- I've always been a proponent of compensation based on bid and this really speaks to it (Spezza situation).
- ALways funny to see those initial starting bids with small increase and when it comes down to it, the player comes away with a juicy high end contract...

I think some people make the minimum bid just to get their name in on the player so that they don't need to give them a $500K increase if they want to bid on the last day.
Other than that, there isn't really a reason to bid the minimum on Datsyuk, who is guaranteed to go for at least $7.5 million.

This post brings up three distinct responses in me: 1: WAAAHHHHHH 2: LOL 3: Told you so Ive been a proponent of bid based compensation for 10 years, and have gotten lots of blowback for it, even from Adam himself. Now that youre on the other side youre sad? I had 2 10 mil bids on RFAs in ONE YEAR. and I had 30 mil in cap space. it was clear I would match. But yeah, all thats happening is price enforcing. Im sure Jim would be very happy for you not to match. So i dont see how its a bad move on his part.

Honestly, situations like Spezza are great for the health of the league.
An RFA who is usually great has an off year on his contract year therefore making him basically freely available to every GM in the league? That's a GOOD thing IMO, if you want him, you match, if you can't match, you lose out...thats what bidding is all about.

I kind of agree with Adam to an extent. Jim's bid does nothing to deter a matching re-sign with all the cap room Det has, other than raise the players salary, and for what? Is Jim the league salary regulator lol?
For argument sake, let's say my 1st round pick was at he end of the round. Honestly, you wouldn't be annoyed if I bid $5.5mil on Ward? You have tons of cap room so I know you'll re-sign him, and my $5.5mil bid isn't going to scare you off, so what would be my objective other than to raise your players salary for the heck of it?

Honestly it happens every FA. It sucks when you're on the wrong end of it, because it can really screw up your off season plans. Even worse if everyone knows you would resign the player at any cost. I wasn't happy about the Sharp 9 mil bid last season, and I'm still not. It sucks, but it happens in real life too so we deal with it.
