Makes the Crosby trade look that much worse, to be honest. All the trades really.

If we don't get a new Gm for the Isles in time for Fa, maybe we should do the draft first, like the NHL.

Lots of people praised the Crosby trade at the time. I didn't get it then, and it looks even worse now.
Reminds me of the Calgary Phaneuf trade (in the NHL)... except so much worse because it is Crosby.

If we did the draft first it would be completely impossible for any offer sheets to be made (not that I ever expect any anymore, but still)

Compensation would be picks in next year's draft, which GM's might actually be more willing to lose than picks in this year's draft. That's how it is in the real NHL. The draft is before free agency and offer sheet compensation would be picks from the next draft.

By the way, not saying that it would be a good or a bad thing, just more interesting, maybe.

Possibly, the issue then becomes is that compensation strong enough for everyone? The endless debate on comp being too high vs too low resumes!

I'd like to see us do it like the NHL. Mainly because I get a bit anxious doing nothing as free agency is set up... might as well get the draft done! While Jon and Gavin set up FA, put a couple of guys in charge of the draft.

While I'm sure nobody would mind doing draft early, we'd have to completely restructure RFA comp (unless we just kept it the same but moved all the picks back a year).
Would we still consider that enough?

Why would we need to restructure everything? I think just moving everything back a year makes sense and is simple.

We could re-look at the compensation, but it looks pretty reasonable. It's close to NHL compensation. We could compare the two and see if any adjustments should be made.
I don't think it really matters if the picks are for this year or for next year. The team making the offer still has to have the picks and the team whose RFA gets the offer still has the right to match. But I do think it might cause teams to at least consider a few more offer sheets.

I think we should certainly consider this. Otherwise we have to pretty much shut down til we get a new GM.

I don't think we should make changes on the fly! Changes should be implemented once season ends and before trading starts next season. Just hit pause button on FA until we get new Isles GM. IMHO!
