The Wild have made a blockbuster deal today trading away the future face of the franchise in a blockbuster.
Anze Kopitar is going to be a future superstar think a two-way 90+ point player in a Mats Sundin mold. He will also be under contract with no threat of RFA offers until he is 28 years old.
Lets take a look at what the Wild got in return foe a future super star player..
Matthew Lombardi is an emerging two way force. He has blazing speed to go along with tremendous offensive potential and is already defensively aware. He will be the Wild second line center moving forward as Zubrus will be given the first center spot. We will expect 25-30 goals and 60-70 points from Lombodi as soon as next season while providing strong defense. He only makes 100K for the next two seasons after this one. I love this piece of the deal.
Corey Sarich has finally started to come into his own. At 28 years old he is just entering his prime and has been improving. Holds excellent size and is a good shot blocker. Will round out the defense for the next four season and only makes 1.5 million dollars. A very solid piece moving forward. Depth is important.
Lauri Korpikoski He could play in the NHL right now as a third liner. So strong on the puck, great speed, excellent defensive skill. Just needs to develop his scoring touch. Should become a 2nd line winger within two seasons.
Chicago 1st rd pick I need depth in the system and adding another first round pick will be huge come the draft as it is very, very deep this season.
A tremendous package full of potential for a future superstar.

The defense is all but done.
Brian Campbell - Mike Komisarek Steve Staios - Kevin Bieksa Paul Ranger - Cory Sarich
Extra: Christoph Schubert/Garnet Exelby
We have everyone locked up on long term deals 3 years after this season. Komisarek will have 1 year left after this season but will be an RFA when hes 24 so he will get a cheap four year extension. Staios will recieve the 35% signing to a two year extension at seasons end.
We feel being able to go eight deep on defense will be huge over the course of an entire season. When injuries happen there will not be a huge drop off in production. Depth equals success.

I would just like to point out my roster for next season. Not to sound arrogant or anything, just want my other fellow GMs to notice what is happening in Minnesota.
Lee Stempniak - Scott Gomez - Dainius Zubrus ? - Matthew Lombardi - ? Peter Schaefer - Tomas Plekanec - Trent Hunter Josef Vasicek - Maxim Lapierre - Marcus Nilson
Extra: Nothing
Brian Campbell - Mike Komisarek Steve Staios - Kevin Bieksa Paul Ranger - Cory Sarich
Extra: Christoph Schubert/Garnet Exelby
Martin Biron Chris Osgood
Finances
Kevin Bieksa 6.0 (3) Lee Stempniak 3.8 (3) Paul Ranger 3.5 (3) Chris Osgood 3.2 (1) Dainius Zubrus 3.1 (1) Brian Campbell 3.0 (3) Martin Biron 2.8 (4) RFA reign Christoph Shubert 2.5 (3) Steve Staios 2.1 (2) UFA 35% resign Scott Gomez 2.0 (1) Peter Schaefer 1.975 (2) Cory Sarich 1.5 (3) Marcus Nilson 1.35 (1) Josef Vasicek 1.0 (4) RFA resign Tomas Plekanec 1.0 (4) RFA resign) Mike Komisarek 800K (1) Garnet Exelby 700K (3) Maxim Lapierre 500K (3) Trent Hunter 238K (2) Matthew Lombardi 105K (2)
Farm: 800K
20 players: 39.988.000
- 15 million dollars to spend on grabbing a two-way LW and a two-way RW to play with Lombardi next year. I will also work on up grading the bottom six.
- Defense goes eight deep and all have size and can play defense, except for Campball but his job is offense. (Working on getting another defensive monster, we will see what comes about there.)
- Goaltending could be a concern next year especially endurence so both goalies could play 41 games a piece. The defense will be awesome though. The bright side is Biron is a UFA in the NHL at the end of the year so he could get a nice rerate in two years.
As for my farm system which was pretty bare when I got here aside from Kopitar and Zagrapan
Prospects
Claude Giroux J-F Jacques Marek Zagrapan Lauri Korpikoski Nigel Dawes Ryan White Mathieu Carle Jhonas Enroth Alexander Vasyunov Cal Clutterbuck Alexander Bamugin Ben Shutron Eric Gryba
Year: 2007: Min 1, Chi 1,Car 1, Min 2, San 2, Min 3, Min 4, Min 5
Not too bad, just have to let the players develop and as they get older value will rise.
Everything I do is to try and get this team in contention with the big guns in the West. Won't be too long now.
