In general I think max deals are horrible for cap management, but as Ron said, 1 year deals are easier to work around. It's when it gets to 2-3 years where you can potentially really get %^&*ed. End of day you're investing 1/6th of your cap into one player, so that player better be incredible both here and in the NHL. In the event of an albatross, those contracts end up becoming a 2.5m 3.5m cap hit (dropped player)...which isn't impossible to work around at all.

Man, the only time I would drop 10 mil on anyone would be for one year and one year only! But that's just me, do not see the value of doing that no matter who! As long as they can be counted on to show up, its not a big deal, especially if aren't pushing yourself up against the cap to do it. If I only had 10m to spend, it would be a bad idea, but when you have 15m or so AFTER signing one...meh Plus one less guy I could trade

Cant really argue with you. You have the experience and the team record. My squad is young and cheap for the most part and I have room for a couple years so i figured id be ok. When my young guys all need to get paid i will probably approach free agency more like a flea market and just get the little things nobody really wants

My team is always changing because I am always trying to make deals...nuts but works for me...I have fun talking deals! But you will be up there real sure getting those young pieces!

Yea I myself go back and forth all the time between competing and retooling. Don't have the patience for a complete tear down, which is why I give up on picks and prospects easily. Went into this season thinking it's gonna be a backseat type of season but my juices are flowing and now I want all your UFAs. In Toronto, we fight for that inch, because it's the difference between winning or losing, living or dying!

Question: If your roster is over the 50 max players, will you be aload to bid the first week from the unassigned list? Don't see it in the rules.

I guess you have to be compliant by season start...but I don't recall if drops will open again before we start the season, so nobody should be over right now anyway. Need to talk to Jon about it. Edit: Looks like Tampa Bay has 51 players, but thats the only GM anywhere near the limit.

Drops don't open til season starts. Just looked at the season schedule in the rules.
We have 1 GM over max.

The only other way before the season starts would be a trade.
